So, after years of sketching out ideas and mockups, I finally got around to finishing my computer desk. You can see some of my sketches from the original post here. The main section of the desk is finally done.
I built it using four sheets of 3/4″ plywood, alternated and laminated together with a 1/2″ thick solid wood flooring material glued to the top. These layers are cased in by a 2″ aluminum strip around the outside edge. The desk is resting on a 2×4 mounted to the wall, and uses the two file cabinets as bases.
There are no other support structures on the bottom so I have complete freedom to swing my legs around under the desk without banging my shin on a table leg. There is an open section in the front of the desk that I plan on closing up with a single large piece of cool looking material in the future, but I don’t know what that is yet – just keeping my eyes open for something. I am very pleased with the surface, look and strength of the desk. A friend of mine said that it looks like a giant iphone :).
The last piece of the puzzle that is my office will be the shelving that will mount to the wall above and behind the desk. The four monitor mount that you see in the pics is just temporary, I plan on mounting them to the desk AND a shelf above, and moving them a bit closer to my eyes at the same time. This will require drilling a hole or two in the surface of the desk :(…
I’ll post more completed pictures when the shelving unit is done.
