As an artist and a designer, I have to split my time between creative, fun stuff and projects that I am working on for a client. From time to time, it seems like the client stuff takes over and sucks all the fun out of being an artist. My first love as an illustrator has always been figure drawing – though I don’t get to do it nearly as much as I would like.
Sometimes I am waiting on feedback from a client or I just need to take a break from a project that I’m working on and I’ll do a loose 20 minute figure drawing just to keep me in the game – this is one of those drawings. I spent about 15 – 20 minutes on the whole thing, loose sketch, ink then loose paint. The reference was a photograph that one of my followers posted on deviantart. Sometimes when I see a certain image I feel compelled to sketch it. I’m not sure why this happens but if you are an artist, you know exactly what I mean.
This usually happens with images of people, but it also happens with a lot of other types of things as well like horses, cars, even architecture… I did a drawing of a snake the other day because I liked the way its body was coiled up on itself. Either way, this is the three step process that I used for this illustration – hope you like it.
